Story Telling Image Bank

Written Text
Magazines

Most magazine articles are displayed as a 2 page spread, expanding for a number of pages. On one page will be the picture of the celebrity modelling, the only text will be a description of what they are wearing (who the clothing is by, what its called and how much it costs). It is then followed by another page which is strictly text, usually the text will vary in size, it will predominantly be small text but then it will have a part that it is large text which is usually an interesting part of the text that will interest the reader, making them want to read the article. The celebrity seems to be against a white background a majority of the time which matches the background of the entire spread, it is quite consistent. The pictures are in colour and this makes the image stand out against the white background. The entire face is always included in the shots to make the reader aware who it is about.

Again, this magazine article has kept images to one side however instead of strictly modelling photos this magazine has included silly photos as if  it is an expression of the celebrity. I like this idea as it looks more natural and you feel as if the story hasn't been so manipulated. This is the opening 2 page spread of an article and it has the celebrities name bigger than any other text and then it has a subheading  as the second biggest, an interesting text bigger as well like in the middle sort of. The layout of the text works in columns in every magazine article.

This magazine has dedicated a 2 page spread mainly to a picture, however it does have text accompanying the picture but it is just a quote of something interesting the celebrity has said.  The picture looks as if it is being organised when it has been taken, providing a sense of realism as it represents how this celebrities life is organised. In the article of Duffy, where she is messing around she seems to be more carefree, unless presenting fashion, like the Emma Watson article, I think the structure of the shoot and the photos created is a representation of the life of the person.

A quote

In this photo text has been used to emphasise the picture, the writing in this photo sends the message which is straight, abrupt and to the point. This photo has took a stereotypical relaxing placing and used the text 'relax' through the material in the area. I like this idea as it is very simple, however I mainly like it because of the composition. You have the text, the tide, the waves, the sea, its almost advice that once you relax all this beauty comes afterwards, I like the message sent. The story within this picture almost seems withheld and yet to be told as you must relax and forget everything in order to create a story.

In this image the written text almost portrays a personal story of a thought a person has carried around but it too afraid to express verbally. Its feels as if they keep this thought as a secret and as if there is a story behind why they feel this way, this photo also forces those who have viewed this to possibly construct their own story in their for what this person is feeling, This photo of written text is in black and white and provides a sense of honesty and that fact is quite frightening as this piece of writing is the persons escape and the story of their life is quite upsetting.

This image tells the story of how some people live in different areas through the use of graffiti, their is writing which I assume expresses their view (linking in with personal comment) however due to it being in Arabic I cannot read it. I like the idea of using graffiti that can be found in London to tell the story of what Londoners pass everyday, and to incorporate personal comment to show their train of thought. The image accompanying the written text adds emphasis to what is happening and displays it in a much easier format.

Books

In this image a story is told through the written text of an actual story, I like the idea that a person favourite quote has been photographed and the image is surrounding the purpose of a story. The use of the book is the way that the story is told. The picture has been put in black and white, which alters the tone and changes the mood of the picture to quite a deep emotive picture. This picture is effective for story telling because where this person has picked out this part of a story, it may seem appropriate to them or it is a book they are passionate about which means a story that is personal to them, which is a story within itself.
"Maybe our favourite quotations say more about us than the stories and the people we are quoting- John Green

This picture shows someone reading their favourite book which is again a story in itself as it is a description of what they are passionate about. the story consists of wondering what their favourite part is, what about the book makes it their favourite? There is wear and tear on the book which shows it has been read many times. The photo has been changed to black and white, again changing the tone to an emotive, deep feel, this suggesting that there is an emotional, personal attachment to the story. This photo tells the story of the love and feeling for a book, a creation of fictional events.

This picture shows a collection of books which seems to be in a library which tells the story of how different types of people come together in one place in the community and unit as one. This could be a persons book case which tells a personal story of again why these are a persons favourite story and to what level they engage in the story. Their story of life is involved into the stories in which they love.
"You can tell about a person by their favourite books"

Photos
A series of photos

This series of photos shows a a girlfriend guiding her boyfriend around the world, coming to a new iconic or beautiful place each time. Originally these photos were separated but someone has put these into a collage. By these pictures the story of travelling is being told, or being in the company of those you love. This series of photos also shows the aspect of adoration, almost following her around. The use of a series of photos grants the possibility to retell an event. Personally, if I had done this I would of organised the images chronologically so that it tells it in order, however by the images not being in order this could say how things don't need to be in order because she is always in front of him, and she is the only constant. This series of photos represents the story of love.

This image tells a personal story of a woman who is undergoing chemotherapy as a result of cancer. There aren't as many pictures as the previous picture, however I think this is more effective as it shows how simply something can change. In this series of photos the setting is also kept the same however with each important stage the medical utensils increase in the background, this is a more subtle change but when looked at thoroughly you can see it and you can determine that this is actually quite a saddening photo. The picture has been put in black and white because it is quite emotional, compared to the last picture the themes are very different. The other photo is bright in colour and this one is black and white and it is almost evident there are meant to be 2 completely different emotions towards the photos.

This series of photos emphasises a certain story of a couples moment. The photos are quite similar however are different and expresses the way they are laying together, it almost tells the event of their morning/evening.  It almost acts a timeline if you look at the pictures thoroughly. The moment seems as if it begins of when they go into bed, then them getting affectionate, to them having sex, to then them lying beside each other and them then spooning into each other, falling asleep. This is their personal story and I really like how this has been ordered and I like the use of the grid to display the series of photos. The image has been transformed into black and white which to me displays honesty, truth, and the view of things as they are. Both this photo and the previous photo has used a theme of three photos horizontally which I prefer because it doesn't over crowd the image and it makes it softer on the eyes. I like the 3x3 grid used in this picture as it seems even and ore aesthetically pleasing.

Single photo

In this photo the single photo tells the story of 9/11, i'm guessing this photo has been recreated as personally I think it is flawless. I like the composition of this photo, I like how the cross is in front of the of the crashing buildings as it seems s though the people dying are falling into God. I also like how the smoke collides against the buildings either sides of the towers as this to me illustrates that the victims were not the only ones effected in this tragedy and that in fact everyone in the general public was effected from this incident. I also like the sharpness of this picture as it makes the cross stand out and emphasises how important religion was for everyone throughout this travesty. I also like how the picture has been kept in colour as it provides a sense of realism and I think it makes this picture seem unedited and simply brilliant.

In this picture I believe the story is that this picture conjures questions about this woman's story. The use of form in this picture produces a feeling that she is the only one there and therefore lonely. The basic white setting of her wall doesn't steal too much attention away from the focal point of the picture which I like, it also reflects her shadow. I also like the tone of this picture as it has been put into black and white which to me produces a feeling of sadness and emphasises her loneliness. All these elements, including the plot of the picture which is her holding herself, produces questions such as 'what is wrong?' and 'why doesn't she speak to someone?'. This photo doesn't need multiple side photos to show what she is feeling, you can tell through just one photo, however perhaps a few more photos would explain her story better. Although, perhaps this story is a cliffhanger.

This single picture tells the story of a girls mind who is suffering from body dysmorphia. The editing in this picture is exceptional and tells the story very well. The fact that the setting and composition has been kept the same throughout the editing shows hard work. This picture is very effective on the audience as even what she looks like in her reflection is beautiful and it makes you think 'why would she not be happy looking like that?'. I like how this picture has been kept in natural colour because it doesn't seem over edited which emphasises the idea that when this girl looks in the mirror, this is what she actually sees. This photo has the potential to shock as the story which isn't told isn't one all can relate to. This photo also ties into the topic of personal comment as more and more these days this is what teenage girls are suffering with.

Actual Stories
Fairytales

This picture shows a little girl on top of a pile of mattresses which looks to be the princess and the pea. This image is good because of the setting and colours, giving it an enchanted theme, also the use of the child reflects who the story is for and it represents a child getting lost in a story. I like the subtle yet pretty colours in this picture as to me it reflects the little girl and her innocence, emphasising how easy she finds it to get engrossed in a story. This also shows children in a nice perspective as they are at the age where they can be anything and do anything they want, this photo now shows to me a child being lost in a different world before they are thrown into the one of growing up.

This photo tells the story of beauty and the beast and this photo to me mixes in with personal comment as it shows that nobody is perfect. Various grafting is being done to her face as an attempt to be 'beautiful'. This isn't only a reconstruction of a modern day fairy tale but it also tells the story in society today, and following the story of beauty and the beast, the message is to fall in love with a personality, however this picture juxtaposes against that moral. This is then telling the story of how not everything is as it seems and that perhaps our favourite stories are lies and go against their own lessons they teach and morals.

This picture is a modern day twist on the fairytale of aladdin, this photo shows what is reconstructed to be princess jasmine walking through the dessert with a gun in the hand. To me this picture mixes with personal comment as Jasmine is conforming to the stereotype of being an arab means your a terrorist, which is racist and incorrect, however i think this picture is being ironic with this picture. This pictures sharpness makes the princess the focal point of this image which I like as it makes seem the most important against the explosions and war behind her. You can tell this picture is being ironic because within wars woman aren't allowed on the front line, especially muslim women who aren't even allows in the army. I also like the setting of this image as it doesn't even seem edited and it goes with the plot of the picture. I like how this image gas been kept in colour as I feel the colour in this picture is very important as it adds to the middle east setting.

Comics

This story is a recreation of superman, a normal man who is someone else inside, hiding something. I don't feel like this picture represents superman quite so literally, but he is merely using him as an example, I think this photo tells the story of a man being someone else inside that no one else knows about, being someone bigger than everyone else thinks he is, being more than average. I like how he shows this through a photo held in front of his body as the composition fits almost perfectly. I like how the colour has been kept in the picture as i think it makes the superman photo stand out more as it is against a neutral background and a plain modern day suit, this photo also tells the story of being able to stand out to me. I like how everything is slightly blurred outside the superman picture as it instructs what is meant to be the focal point of the picture, it also makes the superman part stand out which is the moral within this picture: to stand out.

This image seems like a reconstruction of either spiderman (in a woman version) or of x men, either way in this picture the story shows a woman being turned into what seems like a mutant. I like the composition of the camera in this picture as it has sort of twisted the woman's body, which seems to illustrate the situation, in which it is twisted and corrupt. I like the setting of the picture also as it follows the conventions of transformations in comics which is when a person is alone. The props for this picture have been thought out as the transformation of her into a mutant is very obvious and clear to the viewers of this image. There is a shadow behind her on the side where she hasn't yet been transformed, the use of form here acts as foreshadow as it allows us to know that the rest of the transformation is creeping up on her will happen quickly, due to this foreshadow being a shadow, the viewers can connote that it is a dark force. This picture has its own story.

This photo tells the story of a mother and her son and how he is her hero. This picture's tone is quite bright for black and white, which gives a positive vibe to the photo. The boy is seen in a batman costume and the symbol has been kept in colour (even though it is predominantly black) which makes it stand out and seem as if it is the most important part of the picture, this kept colour forces the plot of the picture which is that a mothers child is her hero and her saviour, her everything. This photo more so tells the story of a mothers love for her offspring, which is a positive topic, like the tone of this picture, the picture seems to reflect off the tone of this picture.

Miscellaneous
Timeline

This short timeline tells the story of someones life on drugs and the effect that drugs can have on them. the composition of this shows the persons face halved, therefore as a comparison. I also really like the editing of this picture, it has been done so it has been done on a facebook timeline, as this is an advertisement, this is very striking to the youth as facebook seems to be part of their daily routine and livelihood. The use of text tells the viewers what has happened to this man. I can't tell if the mans drug face has been edited or not but if it is editing it is very good and unnoticeable, meaning it is a good picture. The picture's colour has been kept which I like as this picture doesn't seem strikingly over edited  (apart from the use of text and facebook) and also it produces a sense of realism.

Topic of cultures

This photo tells the story of a culture coming together as one and being one, this is a story that demonstrates togetherness. The mass of people in this photo is a very good point as it emphasises the story of togetherness, also it makes it so no one really stands out on their own at being at the edge or anything, which again emphasises togetherness. I like that the colour has been kept in this picture as it allows it to remain positive and vibrant which to me is what you are meant to feel from this picture. The composition of this picture allows us to see the centre of this what seems to be circle, however the centre you cannot see, you just see the arms meeting which emphasises that everyone is as one and no one is different within this culture.

This picture has a negative view on cultures as this woman is seen in the beauty culture and she is being changed from who she is into someone different, meaning her story is that to fit in with in a culture she has to change. I personally think this picture is negative because it has been put in black and white which presents a dull mood if the tone is also dark which it is. The shadows of the people and the people themselves are changing her so much, and are so engrossed in the process, that you can't even see the woman properly, which emphasises how much this culture takes over, so much that you can't even see yourself anymore. The composition of the camera has been made so you cant see the people changing her's faces, this to me says that the person isn't significant and that cultures have become overpowering and and blinding on the person.

Celebrating Differences
This photo was shot for a dove campaign for the topic of celebrating differences, this photo to me tells the story that everyone is beautiful no matter what. The women in this picture are of different sizes, colours, heights, everything. I like this picture as it doesn't seem as if it has been edited which emphasises the message of beauty and that you are perfect as you are. I like the use of a white back drop as it doesn't steal any attention away from the picture and the purpose is to look at these women and nothing else. I also like the composition of this picture, I like how each women seems to be leaning on each other, demonstrating the idea that we are unit, this mixes in with the idea of culture and the idea of how united the female culture is. This photo merges with the topic of personal comment and how everyone is equal and the same and everyone is considered beautiful.

The setting of this photo is a celebration as due to the woman's attire and the mans suit we can see that this is a wedding, and in fact this is the bride and groom. The difference is that of race which is now accepted mostly, however some racists refuse to approve. I like that this picture has been placed in black and white as to me this shows sentimental value, but also it emphasises the difference in their skin colour as it makes the woman seem whiter and the man seem darker, this looks really good as they near each other for a kiss. I like how they are focused and the setting behind them is slightly blurred as this then shows that they are all that matters. I like how this picture hasn't been made a close up as i think the dressing and props in this image are important as they illustrate the importance of the day and the significance, the joining of two people in love, despite their races, yet embracing them, or more so, letting them be nothing.  This photo tells the story of an important day.

This picture tells the story of two men coming together in love and kissing, despite it not being the stereotypical normal thing to do as it is not a man and a woman. I like how this picture has been put in black and white as there is glitter on one of the mens face and no doubt this is bright and this would steal some of the attention away from the main part of the photo. I like the framing of this photo as it keeps the men at the same level which I think is an aesthetically pleasing composition. I like that parts of this photo are blurred as to me this could show mild parts of drunken haziness but the bits that aren't (which is mainly the kiss) shows that this is meant to be. I assume the blurs represent drunken haziness as they seem as if they are in a club/party (because of the glitter) and thats what everyone tends to do when at a club/party.

Micro Stories

This photo tells the story of what this person finds beautiful, what this person appreciates, what this person is doing, this is considered a micro story because it is not important, it is not a story that talks of world changing events such as war. However I disagree, because experiences that people love change their World and make it better for one person for that time. I like the editing of this picture so that the image is clearly reflected in the lens so the viewers can be aware slightly of who finds this subject interesting and what that subject is. I also like how everything is blurred behind this person so that it focuses on just this person, for it is considered to be only them that this micro story effects. I also like how the colour has been kept in this picture as to me these soft colours represent happiness so can set the mood for the photo.

This picture tells the story of a child beginning to walk, we can tell its a child through the use of their nappy hanging down but also through the use of form, their shadow hits the wall opposite them. Again, everything behind the child is unfocused which shows that the walking is the main part of the photo and this sends the message that perhaps this the child's first steps being taken. The colours in this photo are subtle and I like this effect as to me it sends the message that the child is warming up and blooming.

Documentary

This photo is documentary photography which tells the story of something that is happening at that moment in time. I find in this picture you can also see the stereotypical story of a hero saving the damsel in distress, the hero being a war hero and the damsel in distress being guarded as the hero stands over her. I liked the tone in this picture, I find the dark represents evil (the war hero who is fighting in conflict) and the light represents good (the woman who's clothes are lighter showing innocence), this then showing good vs evil as they are placed next to each other, which to me represents juxtaposition. I also like the setting in this photo as stereotypical war documentary photo shows the war field however this shows another side that we are not seen, innocent civilians being harmed due to the conflict that surrounds them.
