Pocahontus meets Dorothy Shoot Work Record-7

In this shoot I wanted to incorporate fairy tales to tell stories so I did half of my shoot taking pictures of Demi in a Pocahontus costume and half of the shoot as self portraits where I (dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz) am standing next to her, to me this shoot represents the merging of stories. Initially that was the point of the shoot but then we started getting silly and the shots came out playful and as we both looked older the shoot represented the stories that still live in us today as we grow up.

In this photo I took a picture of Demi with the wig on that emphasised the disney story of Pocahontus even more so as she shared more of a physical resemblance to her. I used saturation on this picture and I like that way the backdrop goes from a dark colour to black at the bottom, this made her stand out, I made her stand in a power stance as in stories Pochanontus was represented as a strong woman. In this photo I used the burn tool to put little smudges of what looks like dirt under her eyes and on parts of her arms. I really like the edit of this photo and it surprised me as the initial photo didn't look that good.
In this photo Demi took of her week and she was simply a teenage girl in a disney outfit, representing the story that still lives in her. I like this picture as she looks surprised as she walks forward, almost like she is entering a new story, perhaps adulthood, this picture for me represents the in between age of a person in which you are not a child and not an adult. I edited this picture using selective colour after I turned it black and white, I like this as it brings out the certain features of her outfit and her eyes which are wide eyed, representing innocence is still within her, suggesting that she doesn't quite know what she is walking into.

I really liked doing this shoot, if I was to do it again I would get more models with more fairytale/disney outfits and solely base it on the story of erupting form childhood and the stories that still live in us.

Jim Goldberg

Jim Goldberg is an American photographer who uses text over his photos to tell a story of that moment in time, he also used blurring to explain a part of time and uses grids to emphasize the narrative at that point in time, something I have already started to do. I have chosen this photographer because I feel I can follow his work and learn from it.

In this picture Jim has shot an old man in bed and the audience connotes this as he is dying along with the text, the text narrates this moment like a story and almost presents it as a thought track, I like this idea as this acts as a personal story and it is convey in a story telling manner of text, however it is also accompanied with image.  I noticed Jim put this in black and white and for me this represented a sense of truth, also it represented death as all the color and life in the photo has been extracted, this man is giving a brief synopsis of his life within this photo.

This photo has influenced me to scan my handwriting onto a computer and accompany it with a picture to produce a diary like narrative.

In this photo Goldberg is addressing a gay relationship. He again is expressing the though tracks of both men and this photo also mixes in with the question topic of personal comment as they are addressing a popular topic within society which each person holds a different opinion on. This photo has also been put in black and white which seems like a theme within his photography. This photo has made me notice that with each written comment the handwriting changes, this makes the image and situation seem a lot more personal and therefore becomes more truthful and emotional for the audience. I really love this photo as it shows two different sides of a homosexual relationship.

This picture has influenced me to vary handwriting so it seems the photo is a diary and to make it a more personal and interesting story.

This photo contains two different images and then text which I like, because it isn't an organised grid which helps tell the story of this person, their life wasn't intended to go this way and it is just a mere collection of moments. Goldberg has again kept this in black and white, a common running theme in his work which I admire as he embraces continuity, again this shows to me honesty and being stripped down to the emotional bare. The text is a boy narrating his own story however the pictures which are linked explains the parts of his life which he is explaining.

This photo has influence me to use more than one image in a picture however not in a grid format to represent the mood of a picture or the message in a picture, for example, lack of order and continuity in this picture.

In this picture Goldberg doesn't use his theme of black and white and I like this as it breaks up his work and prevents it from becoming predictable. In this picture he focuses on passiveness in my eyes and this is made clear through the last picture which is a sticker saying "wake up", this is then backed up by peoples eyes drooping, being shut or relaxing. This photo shows Goldbergs personal comment of his country and to me, even though the main focal point middle picture is of a woman, if you follow this grid chronologically the last think you see is the "wake up" sign, this meaning this is the message he wants his audience to take away.

This photo has influenced me to use grids more so in an order that the most important picture lands last to be the lasting effect of the picture.

Overall I really like this photographer and I intend to do a shoot based on his work, with the use of black and white when editing and scanning my writing to the computer to produce a personal narrative, formulating a micro story.

Dina Goldstein

Dina Goldstein is a Canadian photographer who's photography is explained to be documentary, however i think she airs her own personal comment within her photos also, my favorite example of her work is when she uses the stories of fairy tales and spins her own personal comments on them.

Examples of their work

In this photo the disney princess Ariel has been put in an aquarium and this picture to me feels as if it is being put in a modern/realist situation, if there was a mermaid the world would know about it and the creature would be exploited. The use of the child standing next makes the audience feel bad as the children are the consumers of such a story and it sort of suggests that we are lying to them. I like the setting of this photo and that the color has been kept in this picture.

This photo has influenced me to use more adventurous setting, and perhaps to consider different locations with models as it creates a better narrative for a photo.

In this photo Dina seems to have used the ideology of a timeline and that none of us can escape time and that stories that are explained to children don't often face what happens after the stereotypical 'happy ever after'. This photo shows a man who is portrayed to be prince charming waiting for his princess and still awaiting his happy ever after, which doesn't look like its coming. I really like the setting in this picture as it has placed an old classic in a modern setting and put a spin on how we think after a story.

This photo has influenced me to consider doing a narrative which incorporates how life becomes after the big kiss in stories and how in the real world the story would end and how it would be after.

In this picture the disney princess Rapunzel, who is infamously known for her long her is seen having chemotherapy and losing her signature look. This to me is an introduction of figments of the imagination into the real word, and the deterioration of something believed to be perfect. I really like this as it is quite a risky, controversial picture to release. I like the form of the hospital utensils on the wall as it makes it seem as if it is bigger in her. I also like that this photo isn't zoomed in as you do not need to see her facial expression as the hair on the bed says it all.

This photo has influenced me to take risks with my photographer and do things that are controversial but raise questions and topics, it must be expressive.

In this picture red riding hood has been turned overweight which is a spin on the story as in the story red riding hood delivers goods to her grandmother daily, in this picture red riding hood has obviously given into temptation. I really like the setting of this picture as it follows the narrative of the story, the costume is also very iconic in this picture as the red hood automatically connotes to the story of red riding hood and gives the audience the knowledge they need of what this photo is about. The use of mcdonalds in the basket makes this photo quite modern and sort of emphasises that too much junk food can leave you like this, this is then an alert to the audience that this can happen to anyone.

This photo has influenced me to consider costume to tell a story and that when dong fairy tale shoots i should use a costume which is a giveaway to the audience of what story I am telling/manipulating.

Overall I really like this photographers work and her personal comment on fairy tales in the modern day, I also like her work on barbie which I have seen but didn't list on here as I felt it swished towards personal comment more, I plan to model some of my work after her work.

Zoo Shoot Work Record -6

I did this shoot on the location of London Zoo and I shot the story of my day which had a beginning, middle and end, I shot the middle of my story in which I was in the zoo. I mainly shot the animals however I shot joking pictures of my self which did get chosen. I liked this shoot (not only because it was a day out for me) but because I got the chance to shoot wildlife quite close up, and it looked really good. I brought my memory card into the lesson and I put all the photos into contact sheets, I then chose my top ones and Paul did also. I then begun to edit however I decided to keep the colour of all the pictures quite natural as the animals are a natural part of life, I suppose this shoot also fits in with the topic of Natural World.

These pictures were initially pictures where I joked around just taking pictures of myself, but Paul liked the idea of these and suggested I put all 3 in a grid, so I did and I really liked the outcomes as they show me having a good time. I really like the grid of this as usually I am used to using a 3x3 grid however this is 3x1. This photography isnt really professional as it is considered as 'selfies' however this could be seen as modern photography. I didn't over edit these pictures as I like the natural greenery in the background. Also I liked the idea of this being a natural shoot and this is my natural self.

In this photo I shot a lizard from behind glass however the glass didnt affect the photography. Naturally, lizards are known for their fast movement, knowing this, I duplicated the layer, dragged it to the side a bit and turned the opacity down, making the duplicate make the initial picture look like it is blurred in speed. I could of changed the shutter speed of my camera however I liked the still image of this photo and only decided to edit it this way when I got back to college. I love the color of the lizard in this photo, therefore I didnt edit the color of this photo. I was going to use selective color but I decided against it, I am glad I did as I love the outcome of this photo.

I was really happy with this shoot and if I was to do it again I would get better close ups of certain animals.

Dog Walk Shoot Work Record -5

I shot this shoot on the weekend, I took my dog on a walk and I really like the forest around my area and I thought it would be really pretty shoot and would tell the micro story of my dog walk. I took various pictures and then took my memory card in on my next photography lesson and uploaded. I didn't want to over edit the pictures as I wanted them to remain natural as the context of my shoot was natural as it was the outside world of a forest, which is full of nature. I liked this shoot as it was very laid back and I didn't feel rushed as I do in the studio as I am on a certain time limit. In the end I only created one overall picture with this shoot, however it was in a grid format and contained 9 photos, it is the grid below.

In this photo, initially I selected my favourite photos from the shoot and then used them, however I decided it would be good if I then took Paul's advice and set them in a chronological order, hence why there is basically the same picture of a walk way, it is an entrance and an exit, it is just shot from different angles. I also used 2 pictures of tree reflections in the water, as if I had passed the same place twice, 2 pictures of the changing sky which sort of tells its different times of the day, it looks like it goes from the morning to the sun up in the sky, I also used two photos of my dog. However I only used one picture of the bridge and I used it for the centre of the picture as it is my favourite picture and this picture alone illustrates the story of a journey. I like the incorporation of natural world in this photo.

Magazine shoot 2 Work Record -4

In this shoot i re shot the initial magazine shoot of Demi and this time I improved it by getting her to wear dresses and heels so she didn't look as casual, I also used a conventional white background, i understand why magazines use this now, it doesn't draw the attention away from the person which they want to be the focal point, with a white background there is physically nothing else to look at. I used 4 studio lights to eliminate any form coming into the picture as that would steal the attention away from the focal point of the picture which I did not want.  I also looked at more fashion style magazines and their poses, the ones i could re create were very basic and relaxed and were usually full length giving the viewers a full view of the person and their attire. I was very please with this shoot and I am very glad that I decided to re shoot this.

In this image I edited the background so it was bright white so it made her red dress stand out even more, making her stand out even more.  This is my favourite photo I have taken and edited in photography so far. The only thing I don't like about this photo is how the white of the background blends onto the chair and her shoes slightly however this is barely visible, still, it is not perfect. I did not edit her particularly in this picture about from using the spot healing brush on one of her scars on her leg, to give her a flawless look, however i did not edit make up on her face and she looks quite natural, giving her a relatable look for the general public.

In this photo i wish i edited so the background was as white as the other one which I might do when i have no outstanding work. Apart from this I like the way I have positioned my model in this picture, she is still full length so the audience is able to see all what she wearing and how she looks in it, but the picture seems very model like which i like, even though this picture is not bright i prefer it like this than bright like the other one because this one maintains an even more natural relatable image for the public.

I am very happy with this shoot and I would not repeat it as this is my second time doing it.

Walking into Summer Work Record -3

In this shoot my theme was walking into my past and I hung up photos of my past to illustrate the story of my life, these pictures hung on string and if I was to do it again I would of used fishing line as it comes up invsible. I used a light blue background as personally it reminds me of the sky and gives the vibe of summer, I also wore a summer dress to set the scene more so. I liked doing this shoot however it was very stressful because the photo's kept spinning so they were the wrong way round, but in the end this didn't matter because it wasn't really the context of the pictures that mattered, it was the big picture shot in the end. I edited these pictures in various ways including selective colour and black and white.  This shot took a lot of preparation and even though I liked the photos I produced, I don't really think it was worth it because of the prep it took.

I like the context of this picture, it as if I am looking back on the story that is my very own past and walking away from it, the flicks of my hair which are waving emphasise this. This picture also raises questions of my story, did I have a bad past time? Or have I simply outgrown it? The message behind this picture is much better than the actual photo in my eyes, which I found a lot within this shoot. I cropped this picture which I like because too much room would show that i didn't actually have  lot of photo strings up. I like how you can't see my face in this photo as it doesn't let you see my emotion which lets the viewers of this photo decode my story as they wish, its almost up to them.

I like this picture as i seem tangled in the pictures, illustrating that my past, my story has a hold of me and you cannot escape it, however I seem happy about this as I have a smile on my face, this creates a positive vibe for this picture and sends a message that you can't escape who you are. You can see some of the photos however some you can't which I decode for them to be smothering me and perhaps personal to just to me which i do not wish to share. I have made the picture brighter and it gave me a slight tan and made my dress brighter, illustrating what summer is about.

Overall i like this shit but if I was to do it again i would use fishing line as it is invisible.

Friday Shoot

bring in halloween costume and do wizard of oz reconstruction self portraits, put hair in plaits, dems red converse with dem indian costume , the real life of fairytales
pocahontus and dorothy

Magazine Shoot 1 Work Record -2

In this lesson I started my image banks and discovered the use of written text in story telling, thus, magazines, I did not use text however I shot photos as if they were in a magazine format, I did not plan to do this shoot, it was more in the moment therefore there wasn't much planning and the shoot didn't actually go that well as it was not I envisioned. However , I liked my model (Demi) and I decided I would do a reshoot of this whatever the outcome as I wanted to do the shoot with her dressed up as if she was a celebrity, also to follow the conventions of a magazine, these photos did not tell a story themselves but the format they would be in would tell a story if I added content. I shot these pictures against a grey background which doesn't follow the conventions of a magazine shoot. The photos I shot were very natural which I like and I didn't edit them obviously to leave a sense of realism and honesty to the picture which produces honesty in the story of the magazine.

In this picture I took it whilst she didn't know and I made her laugh, this to me is a very nice natural picture however I wouldn't of chose it for my straight prints for a magazine format, however Paul did therefore I left it unedited because if i wanted it to be a natural photo of her laughing, i didn't want to ruin it by over editing.

In this picture I like the way Demi is looking straight at the camera and her face is sort of shadowed over as to me it reveals a part of her that we dont know despite the fact that she is a celebrity (pretending to be in this shoot). Also in magazine shoots the celebrities are often seen wearing some sort of designer, therefore I made her face her wrist forward as it is Michael Kors and contained that element of something designer. In this photo i edited her eye make up and lipstick to make it a bit brighter and heavier, I like this effect and I personally don't think her make up looks edited .

I wasn't overly please with the outcome of this shoot but I didn't expect much of it, I intend to re shoot it where she is wearing more dressy clothes and against a more conventional white background.

Pregnancy Shoot Work Record -1

In this lesson I shot photos in the studio and the subject was my brothers pregnant girlfriend, I made her pregnant belly the focal point of most of the photos. This represented story telling as to me this represented her beginning the next chapter of her life. This shoot followed the ideology of micro stories as this is something she finds important, and it is important, however it is not important to everyone and would not make it in the news. I took these pictures, over 200 in an hour, the props I used included, baby clothes and a frame. I also organised so my model wore plain-ish clothing however on her shoot she wore a top (which I bought her for christmas) which has baby hands and feet on, which added to the narrative of this shoot. I put these photos into contact shoots and then chose my top 4 and edited these, however one picture I edited was a grid which contained 9 photos. The editing of these photos took a while because i wanted a certain vibe for each picture.

This is the grid that I created and I really like the composition I created with this, I like the placement of the picture. I placed the picture with her hands in a heart on her stomach in the middle because her bump (her pregnancy) is the whole point of the shoot. All the pictures on the left have her facing to the right and vice versa with the right side of the picture, and in the middle I positioned it so she was facing forward. i used a white back ground to give a positive vibe to the picture.  The biggest difficulty I faced with this picture was getting the spacing even between every picture so it looked more aesthetically pleasing.

In this picture my model was topless and I cut off her face as it was not important, the belly is the focal point of this picture, I like the fact that she is against a navy background as it makes her body stand out. I also like the lighting in this picture as it creates a nice shadow of form on her stomach, however I edited this so the form looked harder. Through the use of form her belly is emphasised as it makes, in this online version the picture looks very pixelated but on paper it does not. Even though this picture is quite explicit I really like this picture as for me it reveals how you would bare everything for your offspring and this photo tells the story of a mothers love and the beginning of the next chapter for this person.

I really enjoyed this shoot and if I was to do it again I would get my brother again as it tells the story of what they are about to embark on together.

Definition

Dictionary definition: The telling or writing of stories.

Describing words:

  • Biographical
  • Fictional
  • Non fictional
  • Truthful
  • Tragic
  • Legendary
  • Mythical
  • Epic
  • Classic

This photograph shows the tin man in a modern day world in which is the recreation of a story in photography. I like how this picture has been put in black and white as in its earlier creation it was predominantly a black and white movie (with hints of sepia), however by putting it in black and white i feel as if this photographer is trying to keep the tin mans origins included. The use of black and white also doesn't let anyone stand out net to him which makes him the focal point of the picture.

This picture shows a girl reading a book in a soft subtle tone which suggest she is at one, also she is shown to be quite comfortable which emphasizes the fact that she feels at one. There is a flower covering the book and this is very nice as this leads to questions whether she has placed the flower there or whether it is a figment of her imagination and this is the illustration of the book coming to life for her, this image is very simple, yet quite effective.

This picture tells the story of Alice in Wonderland but has been made to seem more modern almost by the slight change of her clothes and due to the editing of this picture which has seemed to make everything look morphed. This picture looks as if it follows the Alice in Wonderland remake as opposed to the original which personally I think seems more mythical and interesting anyway as it involves real people as opposed to a cartoon. I will bare in mind when doing my photos the part that editing can play and how it can even make a photo seem fictional.

This photo tells the story of Tarzan and again as a recreation of the story, however it has kept true to the story by keeping Tarzan in his original place and original clothing as opposed to placing him in a modern situation/habitat of a city. This photo doesn't seem overly edited which I like because it keeps it looking quite natural and therefore more believable as a story as opposed to far fetched. I also like the models stance in this position as it reflects his character, this is something I will try to incorporate in my work.

My definition of story telling: The retelling of an event or creation of a plot which is constructed through personal experiences or the imagination, documented via books, photos, music etc.

Discussion

The topic I have chosen to photograph for unit 2 is Story Telling. I personally think that with story telling there is a lot of ways to incorporate this topic into your work, whether is straightforward e.g. an actual book or photos suggesting a literal story or you can go about it in a way in which you are actually telling a story e.g. pictures of travel (telling the story of your day/journey) or you can include a story already made or themes from a story into your work.

Personally, Story Telling to me can be reached on many different levels and the other topics can be incorporated, especially personal comment which was the other topic I was really interested in. Concerning story telling there are a few ways in which I would like to work with this topic predominantly.

Written text- I think there are a lot of ways in which stories are told with the use of text, not only does this cover a book, however we find out stories through the use of magazines which alerts us of disequilibrium's which are occurring in peoples lives. Also there is the use of quotes which tells a more personal story as opposed to a macro one which is considered important to the whole world. However most obviously, there are books which are a literal story however just by shooting the front of the book could say how this is a story you enjoy and it is a story itself for why you like the book.

Photos- Photos more so work with stories on a micro level in which they tell the stories which are important or relevant to an individual rather than the world. Photos tell the stories of our lives, retelling events of our memories. A series of photos in one image tells this story in a timeline format in which they tend to follow in chronological order, therefore showing the story in an easier format to follow. However sometimes a single photo could be enough to tell a story as the story within the picture is so obvious e.g. a funeral, if there is a coffin you can immediately connote that this image tells the story of loss and goodbyes, you do not need a play by play of the funeral in pictures to guess this.

Actual Stories- When I use the term actual stories I mean the reconstruction or creation of something that uses similar themes or reconstructs the situations of stories that have already been created. When I think of this what springs to mind is fairy tales, comics, old classics which are timeless. Such things are a story within themselves but they can be altered in an appealing way e.g. taking a classic fairy tale and making it modern to fit in today's society, or perhaps creating the next part of a story which isn't involved in the actual story, you get to decided what you think happens next. I think this is the most interesting approach to the topic and I think there could be really original ideas created from the use of actual stories.

I have split this discussion into 3 main topics which I mainly associate with story telling, however within each topic there are subtopics which I will use as incentives for shoots, whether it be on location in studio, with story telling I feel like I could get a lot complete both in the studio and location so I will try to alternate between the 2 equally.
