Discussion

The topic I have chosen to photograph for unit 2 is Story Telling. I personally think that with story telling there is a lot of ways to incorporate this topic into your work, whether is straightforward e.g. an actual book or photos suggesting a literal story or you can go about it in a way in which you are actually telling a story e.g. pictures of travel (telling the story of your day/journey) or you can include a story already made or themes from a story into your work.

Personally, Story Telling to me can be reached on many different levels and the other topics can be incorporated, especially personal comment which was the other topic I was really interested in. Concerning story telling there are a few ways in which I would like to work with this topic predominantly.

Written text- I think there are a lot of ways in which stories are told with the use of text, not only does this cover a book, however we find out stories through the use of magazines which alerts us of disequilibrium's which are occurring in peoples lives. Also there is the use of quotes which tells a more personal story as opposed to a macro one which is considered important to the whole world. However most obviously, there are books which are a literal story however just by shooting the front of the book could say how this is a story you enjoy and it is a story itself for why you like the book.

Photos- Photos more so work with stories on a micro level in which they tell the stories which are important or relevant to an individual rather than the world. Photos tell the stories of our lives, retelling events of our memories. A series of photos in one image tells this story in a timeline format in which they tend to follow in chronological order, therefore showing the story in an easier format to follow. However sometimes a single photo could be enough to tell a story as the story within the picture is so obvious e.g. a funeral, if there is a coffin you can immediately connote that this image tells the story of loss and goodbyes, you do not need a play by play of the funeral in pictures to guess this.

Actual Stories- When I use the term actual stories I mean the reconstruction or creation of something that uses similar themes or reconstructs the situations of stories that have already been created. When I think of this what springs to mind is fairy tales, comics, old classics which are timeless. Such things are a story within themselves but they can be altered in an appealing way e.g. taking a classic fairy tale and making it modern to fit in today's society, or perhaps creating the next part of a story which isn't involved in the actual story, you get to decided what you think happens next. I think this is the most interesting approach to the topic and I think there could be really original ideas created from the use of actual stories.

I have split this discussion into 3 main topics which I mainly associate with story telling, however within each topic there are subtopics which I will use as incentives for shoots, whether it be on location in studio, with story telling I feel like I could get a lot complete both in the studio and location so I will try to alternate between the 2 equally.
